Tennessee Williams, eigentlich Thomas Lanier Williams wurde am 26. März 1911 in Columbus, Mississippi, als erster Sohn und zweites von drei Kindern geboren. 1927 machte sich Williams das erste Mal einen Namen bei einem Aufsatzwettbewerb, der vom Magazin „The Smart Set“ gesponsert wurde. Zwei Jahre später sah er an der Universität von Missouri eine Produktion von Henrik Ibsens Ghosts und entschied danach Schriftsteller zu werden...

b. Columbus, Miss., Mar. 26, 1911, d. Feb. 25, 1983, was an outstanding American playwright and the author of film scripts, short stories, novels, and verse. He was known for his innovations in theatrical technique, as well as for his Southern idioms, compelling dialogue, and themes that--for their time--often seemed strange or shocking. Williams vividly conveyed the sexual tensions and suppressed violence of his tormented characters, usually with compassion as well as irony.
